Dear Financial Aid King,
Woah! My son is about a month into college, and I just received a bill that’s near twice the amount we budgeted for based on his financial aid decision. What is going on here? I need help!
Sincerely,
Helpless
Dear Helpless,
You or your son likely forgot to take action on something related to his financial aid decision. Don’t worry — every college or university has a place to go online where you can see what requirements are satisfied and what you still need to do.
Pro-tip — once you start applying for financial aid, you need to start paying attention to the mail.
Often, families forget a few steps throughout the financial aid process, such as filling out the TAP application (or whatever your state’s application is called), accepting or declining aid, or even signing the FAFSA form.
Most financial aid offices will send mail (and emails) to make you aware of the situation ahead of time, so you don’t feel helpless when you receive the bill.
When the Financial Aid King sends mail, it means something.
I always say that unlike A LOT of mail you receive, in the financial aid office, we’re never going to send you anything that’s not asking you to take some sort of important action.
And, we have plenty of tips to help make college more affordable!
Sincerely,
Financial Aid King
